Healthy skin and a nourished coat are both signs of a healthy cat, inside and out! In addition to giving our cats their good looks (strike a pose), the skin and coat have some important jobs to do…
ProtectionYour cat’s skin and coat provide an effective barrier, protecting their internal organs from external threats. Just like humans, our pet’s skin contains a phenomenal number of nerve endings that help our pets detect temperature, pressure and pain. The coat also helps to protect your pet against UV light. This is why breeds with shorter coats are more prone to developing squamous cell carcinomas (skin cancer).
ImmunityThe skin is an important part of your cat’s immune system. Keeping their skin intact and healthy creates an effective barrier, helping to defend against bacteria, viruses and all other sorts of nasties that would seek to make them unwell.
Temperature regulationFur is a great insulator! A healthy coat helps to keep your pet at the ideal temperature by either moving hair follicles to bring them closer together, trapping heat close to the skin, or allowing air to enter to keep them cool.
